Quick and Easy Blender Salsa
Let me introduce you to the easiest salsa you’ve ever met. It literally comes together in under 5 minutes. Not only is it easy peasy to prepare but it’s down right delicious. Unlike pico de gallo, it’s more like a salsa you’d get in a Mexican restaurant served with chips before you get dinner.
This is perfect for the winter months when tomatoes aren’t in season but you’re craving a fresh simple appetizer. It’s a go to recipe of mine when we have a houseful of guests. I can throw it together in no time and I almost always have the ingredients on hand. I mean who doesn’t love chips and salsa? If you raised your hand we might have to stop being friends. For reals. Bacon haters and the non fan of chips and salsa are deal breakers in my life. And you think I’m joking.
In a food processor or blender, I combine a can of diced tomatoes, a can of Rotel which is seasoned diced tomatoes with green chilies, 1/2 of a small onion, 1/2 of a jalapeno, lime juice, garlic, cilantro, honey and a few spices. Pulse for 30 seconds and that’s it. I’ve been known to throw in half a cucumber and a carrot before too. This is the kind of salsa that you can’t really screw up. You can follow the recipe below as a guideline and do as you like to make it your own.
It’s the perfect apres nosh after a long day of skiing or snowboarding and the perfect beverage to wash this down is an icy cold beer. Absolute heaven if you ask me.
With the Super Bowl just around the corner, this would be a great easy appetizer to watch the big game. Make sure you’ve got something to serve at half time because this won’t last through the first quarter.

Now all I want for dinner is chips and salsa. Thanks my friend:)
This is quick & easy…also delicious. When getting low, make another batch!!!
I tried this today and it taste sweet to me. I was wondering is there a way that it can be more spicy instead of sweet?
I would omit the honey and add an extra jalapeno for spice, good luck!
I always put 3 kinds of peppers in my salsa. Jalapeno, roasted green Chile, and roasted tomatillos. Gives it some extra spice and flavor.
What is your third kind of pepper? Tomatillos aren’t a pepper, so just wondering what the other one was. I love a salsa with a depth of flavor from different peppers.
I don’t use any peppers in the salsa so I’m not sure what you’re referring to.
I had this in a Restaurant in Guyana, South America and they used fresh tomatoes and garlic that they roasted before blending. It was amazing! Especially with the cassava chips that they served it with!
I have tried MANY homemade salsa recipes and I have to say, roasting using fresh ingredients is the way to go. I am going to try this recipe but by roasting and using fresh ingredients.
Of course using fresh roasted anything will likely taste better but then this wouldn’t be “quick and easy” salsa. it would be “OMG, I can’t believe I just spent a damn hour making salsa!” salsa.
I have so many romas in my garden to use so was going to roast them like you suggested. Do you still use Rotel or skip it and just add some peppers?
To make the salsa less sweet, you can probably omit the honey and add more jalapeno pepper or even cayenne pepper to make it more spicy.
Here’s an easy salsa my four-year old could make. (He’s now 25!) I sat him on the counter next to the blender, and I opened cans, put spoons in spices, and he put it together and pushed the button! He was always so proud that he made the salsa!
1 can Rotell tomatoes (stewed or Mexican)
3 tobasco peppers (the small ones that come is jar of vinegar)
1 four oz. can chpped green chile
1 T. dehydrated onion
3/4 t. salt
1/4 t garlic powder
a dash of black pepper
(a dash if vinegar from tobasco peppers if desired)
Blend 3 seconds. Refrigerate–it thickens and flavors blend.
Yes, add more jalapenos and leave out the honey. Half a jalapeno does not cut it for me!
This stuff is to die for. Best salsa I have ever made. I think the honey makes the difference. FANTASTIC
I would like to make this in bulk with fresh tomatoes from my garden.
We’ve been making a similar salsa for over 10 years and we’ve never been able to trump it. It really is as delicious as you say, and those pics are making me want some now!
I make a salsa really REALLY similar to this. Whirl in half a can of artichoke hearts. It will change your salsa eating life.
I just came in from picking an overwhelming amount of cherry tomatoes and jalapenos and wanted to whip up some fresh salsa. I did a quick search and came to your recipe. Wow! Perfect! Can’t wait till my hubby tries it. And I think this would freeze well. I would put in quart size zipper bags in the desired amount. It may be a little thinner at thaw time, but you could add a little guacamole or avocado to thicken it up at the point of use.
Great idea!!
i use ziplock bowls small just size to eat one setting they are small so they stack well in freezer take couple out let thaw in did not get watered down
Thank you for this super easy delicious salsa. Yum
Just made this and cant stop eating it YUM!!! Only change was i used fresh diced tomatoes since i have so many in the garden.Delish!
I do the same thing during the summer months when tomatoes are so fresh!
I really want to make this salsa but want to use my fresh tomatoes rather than the canned diced and rotel, any suggestions on how to prepare my tomatoes? Can I just chop them up and throw them in fresh or do I need to cook them?? Thanks!!
No need to cook them- go ahead and throw them in the blender!
I made this the other day for my kids to have with chips for a after school snack. It turned out wonderful! My 11 year old daughter pretty much devoured the first bowl by herself! And me and my 10 year old son finished off the second bowl the next night with dinner. It was the best salsa ever. Spicy and just the right consistency of everything. Easy salsa to make takes about 5 mins max. Thanks for sharing will be making this a lot more. Followed the recipe exactly with the exception of using dried cilantro and 1 1/2 tab. of bottled lime juice. Everyone loved it including my husband!
I found this recipe by chance and it is soooooo good! Thank you for sharing this. I am Hispanic and I was very impressed with this sauce.
Love, LOVE this recipe!! Thanks for sharing.
i was wondering if anyone put these in jars and canned them thanks
I just want to let you know this is now my go to recipe for salsa. My husband says I’ve ruin him for ever eating jar salsa again after eating this and it’s my summer go to recipe when I have guests come iver swimming. Thx for sharing I’ve been using this recipe for two years now and it’s a real crowd pleaser and no fail!
I love this hot sauce
oh girl…you are giving me salsa cravings! I always thought I was a chunky pico de gallo salsa type girl, until I started making it like this. I’ve never added rotel to mine, and honey either! changing it up next time! I love seeing those specks of heavenly cilantro!
I am really missing you and the rest of the SLC clan. Hope you are well. and staying warm. 🙂
Ag- the honey gives it the little something extra and lots and lots of cilantro is how I like it! Miss you too!!
The texture of this salsa is exactly what I love. As much as I enjoy the chunky variety, this is even more appealing. And fresh salsa in five minutes? Well, you just can’t beat that.
And it’s good all year round!
Love salsa and this is so easy to make! Just wish we got Rotel in Canada…anything I could substitute for that?
Instead of the rotel, add an additional can of diced tomatoes and a small can of green chilis. You might need a little extra salt! Good luck. You can also order rotel from Amazon.
If you can get Redpack they also have a diced tomato and chiles combo.
The Del Monte brand also has a diced tomato with green chilies – if you have access to that up north.
wow–no ro-tel in canada? its just inconceivable to someone from oklahoma usa. i hope at least you live close to the border lol. best of luck in your search for it from one old guy cook to nord de ligne. tom
My brother and sister-in-law also couldn’t get Rotel in upstate New York. They would stock up on the way home 🙂
It’s a good thing I love both bacon and chips and salsa!! I love this, and now want to eat some!
Freaking. YEAH.
I’m a little embarrassed to admit this – I’ve never made salsa. This recipe is just what I needed to rectify that. Thanks!
You’re welcome, this is such an easy recipe. Good luck!
Am I supposed to drain the tomatoes first? Or just dump the whole can in juice and all?
No need to drain, just dump the whole can in!
Can you can this? Love salsa…we go through so much of it!!
I haven’t tried canning it. I think you would need to add some vinegar or more acid to make it safe for canning.
No need to add acid–tomatoes are acidic enough!
Feel free to leave the acid out. I happen to love the taste of the lime juice so that’s why I add it!
We have a diabetic so no honey for us. Not sure why anyone would add honey to a salsa recipe. This does sound easy to make and will have to try it. My family goes through gallons of hot sauce.
I love the honey. It’s just a little bit and it adds so much depth to the salsa!
The honey cuts the acid in the tomatoes and gives it a smooth flavor. Most acids are mixed with sugar of some kind.
IT’S MY UNDERSTANDING THAT HONEY DOES NOT SPIKE A DIABETIC”S SUGAR. CHECK WITH YOUR DR.
Or use agave. It sweet like honey made from a cactus plant. It doesn’t crystallize like honey & has a low glycemic index. RN
This looks awesome. I’m usually a pico de gallo gal, but you’re right, it’s hard during the winter. Totally going to try this soon!
I like mine with a few cloves of garlic added to the mix, and then black beans and corn stirred in after the food processor has done its thing. Never tried the honey, I will have to do that next time.
I like the addition of black beans, I’ll have to try it!
I’m a salsa person and this looks really good and sounds easy to make.
Ohhh, we can’t wait to try this! Thank you so much for sharing. Love how you get the fresh taste and flavours without having to have access to fresh produce. Will be trying very soon. Happy Cooking!
You may just be my new best friend. Just sayin.
Nice to meet you bestie!
Haha, yep, mine too! I love this!
Thanks for handy salsa recipe. Rotel is new to me.I dont think that Rotel is available in Australia. but i will check and certainly make this one..
I guess my love for chips/nachos, anything crunchy and salty will make us friends one day 🙂
Just curious…can you stick a jar in the freezer?
I use jars to freeze lots of things. Just make sure to leave room for the liquid to expand so it doesn’t break.
Very similar to the Pioneer Woman’s salsa. Love it!
Thanks so much for this recipe! Chunky salsa makes me gag. I love the smooth consistency of restaurant salsa. I can’t wait to try this!
Looks yummy to me. I love making homemade salsa with my fresh tomatoes and LOVE Rotel. I use Rotel in chicken quesida’s Yummy. Cant wait to try this one. thanks for sharing!
Try this with canned fire-roasted tomatoes for a new depth of flavor. I started using honey after I tasted a friend’s homemade salsa .. I think it helps preserve the salsa too. I keep jalapeño powder and freeze-dried cilantro on hand, so I can always make this in a jiffy, even if I don’t have fresh ingredients.
Yum… I do love me some salsa! This is exactly my recipe except I do not use cumin or honey. I will definitely give this one a try!! Another recipe I’ve made is to throw fresh tomato, onion, jalapeno and garlic into the oven and allow them to roast until the onion is translucent… then toss those with the cilantro, lime juice, salt and pepper into the food processor, toss it into the fridge for a bit to get cold and PRESTO, delish!! The roasted veggies give the salsa a wonderful flavor. YUM, I must make some salsa soon. My tastebuds are dancing!! Thanks for sharing :o)
I love chips and salsa and this fresh salsa is perfect since I’ve just about run out of the charred chile salsa I made over the summer! Thanks for sharing.
You bet, enjoy!
How long will the salsa last in the refrigerator, not that I think there will be any left over 🙂
I have some that I made last week and we finished it up last night so I think it should last at least that long!
LOVE this! We make it all the time. Be careful, it’s very addicting. We don’t put honey in it though, I’ll have to try that. We also make a big batch, so we use 4 cans of Rotel, 2 original and 2 mild. It’s gives it a lot of heat without having to use many jalapenos. My husband usually puts a little olive oil in his too. Lots and lots of cilantro makes this fantastic though! 🙂
Try the honey, it’s a nice touch!
I just made it and it’s yummy!!
So glad you liked it!
How long does this last and is there anyway to store it to last a long time. It would be nice to be able to give out as gifts.
I think it would last in the fridge for up to a week or 10 days. I’ve never tried canning this salsa but it would make a great gift!
I didn’t have a jalapeno on hand so I improvised and used sriracha sauce instead…it turned out great! A great way to control the heat. It’s my new “secret ingredient”.
I love it! I’m definitely going to try that…….I love sriracha sauce!
I’d never heard of sriracha sauce before today, read it in one blog post and had to look it up and in the few hours since then I’ve come across it THREE more times. Makes me wonder if I’ve just kind of skipped over the word before because I didn’t know what I was. Mad.
Am going to give this salsa a try as I do sometimes prefer the more saucy/less chunky variety of salsa to eat with tortilla chips. I wonder how people got on with canning it – did anyone ever come back with a report for you on that?
no canning reports yet- I’m pretty sure it’s not safe for preserving written as is. Enjoy it within the week!
Sitting here eating a bowl as I type. We don’t have Rotel here so I used 1 can of Spicy Red Pepper Tomatoes and 1 can Fire Roasted Tomatoes. Delish!!
It’s all about improvising! So glad you enjoyed it!!
I just made this and it is wonderful. I left the ribs and seeds of half of the jalapeno because I like a little more heat to my salsa but couldn’t have it too hot for my husband (that’s why only half of the jalapeno and not the whole thing – lol). I will never buy jar salsa again as I always seem to have these ingredients on hand and it’s so easy to make. Thanks for the recipe!
You’re so welcome! Enjoy!!
Just found you via Pinterest and the lovely picture of your salsa, which I made as soon as I got home from the store.I just noticed I forgot to add the honey…will remember the next time. This stuff is SO GOOD. I picked up some multigrain chips for this, but can’t stop eating it with just a spoon… Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
Debora Cadene,
Atikokan Ontario.
So glad to have you visit the site and glad you enjoyed the salsa! Have a great weekend!!
What kind of onion? White, yellow, or purple?
I used a white onion but you really could use whatever you have on hand!
Making this right now! Can’t wait to try it! I wasn’t sure if I needed to buy a yellow or white onion, but I went with the white onion. Hoever, I am bummed b/c i just realized I forgot the jalapeno and the lime juice.. Hopefully it still tastes as good as yours! Thank you for sharing!!
I was SO excited when I found your recipe on Pinterest that I went to the store immediately and bought all the ingredients…all except the onion and the cumin. Do you think frozen chopped onions would work? And is there anything I can substitute for the cumin or can I leave it out?? I think I might have to go back to the grocery…lol. I cannot wait to try this salsa!!!
I’m sure you could use frozen onions in a pinch although I think fresh is WAY better. You could leave the cumin out. Play around with some other spices, good luck!
I went back to the store and bought a fresh onion and the cumin — I didn’t want to risk it! 🙂 I’m afraid the frozen onion just wouldn’t do the salsa justice. I’m getting ready to go make it right now! Thanks so much, Kelley!!
I couldn’t wait to try this salsa! Just made it a bit ago because we were having company. I tried it first and it’s very good! And easy too!
Great! Enjoy!!
I really like this. i have made it three times in the past 4 days. last night i got a baking dish threw in half cup brown rice, cup of chicken broth, 1/3 cup corn, then slathered this salsa on top of my frozen chicken and covered it then let it cook for like an hr and a half OMGolly! it was fantastic.
Wow, that sounds amazing, so glad you liked it. Quick and easy dinner too, thanks for sharing!
Standing in my kitchen having just taken my first bite of this salsa and I feel compelled to tell you… AMAZING. I want to call all my friends and force them to make it– whether they like salsa or not. I tweaked it a little to suit my taste, but even following the recipe to the letter it’s awesome. Thanks for sharing. Don’t you love the internet??
You just made my day!!! Thanks for the sweet comment!
I LOVE SALSA
I rarely do this on a whim but am headed to the store for a few ingredients! I have to try this salsa – thank you! I saw a few posts asking about canning, but do you think this could be frozen? I wonder how it would thaw?
I’ve never tried to freeze it. It’s so easy to make, I throw it together when I need to. If you do try freezing it, let me know, I’m curious as well!
This sounds just like a salsa I just had at a local restaurant. It was slightly sweet too. I loved it! I can’t wait to try this one. Sounds like a great sauce for many one dish meals. Thanks for sharing!
Do you know exactly how much this makes? I need 2 and a half cups for an enchilada recipe and it would be great! Just didn’t know if I needed to double the recipe to get this amount. Thanks for sharing!
This makes just under 3 cups so you should be just fine! Let me know how the enchiladas turn out!
your cucumber and carrot reminded me that my aunt makes hers with a bit of cabbage. seemed totally foreign to me but i had ancestors from germany living in Texas 😉 so good I crave it now!
I’m going to make this for Super Bowl! 🙂
This is incredible! I made it last night for a meeting and it was a huge hit. You know salsa is really good when you start eating it again at 8 in the morning!
Salsa: the breakfast of champions!!
Made this last night so that I can take it to a party tomorrow. I’m thinking I need to make more. I couldn’t stop sampling it!!! It is delicious and I’m totally throwing out all my other recipes for salsa!!!
So glad you liked it!!
OHMYGOODNESS, this stuff is amazing!!! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! I am a salsa addict, and I’m pretty sure this recipe is only going to make the problem worse–oddly enough, I’m okay with that!
haha! Glad you liked it!
Wow! Have made similar recipes but think the honey and rotel did the trick. We’ll have this in the fridge from now on. Thanks for sharing!
You’re so welcome, thanks for commenting!!
Made this tonight and it was great!! We added more garlic, pepper and a dash of hot sauce to flavor it to our taste. It is just most Mexican rest. salsa. Thanks for the quick and easy recipe.
I would just like to say Thank You! I do not care for chunky salsa at all and love the salsa you get at the restaurant. This is it. Excellent recipe!!
Wow this is good! I doubled the recipe, and even though I forgot the jalepeno, the Rotel really does give some nice heat. The honey, fresh lime and cilantro really freshen it up. This will be my go to salsa recipe. Thanks!!!
I’m so glad you like it. Wow, your “go-to”, I’m flattered!
Wow! Only had roasted hatch peppers and no cilentro (yet). Heading to the store to get some. It’s fabulous even without.
Thanks!
I have made this twice since discovering it on Pinterest. I don’t need the honey, and the tomatoes seemed sweet as is, so I left it out. Still fabulous. Thanks!
It’s all about adjusting to your own taste! Glad you liked it!
I tried this recipe last night and was shocked at how good it is! I make a salsa that takes forever and this was so easy, but the flavor was not lacking. Thank you for sharing such an easy recipe with all of us!
Wow .. I can’t believe how great this recipe is!! Thank you for sharing. I made it for the Superbowl and everyone loved it. I served w/Lavash flatbread chips and oh my word …. seriously good. This one is definitely a keeper!!
I rarely leave comments and feedback on recipes, but I had to stop by and tell you…I found this on Pinterest and made it this weekend for family and friends. Every single person LOVED it!!! I’m not kidding, it was the hit of the party! I’ve never made salsa before and I don’t think I’ll buy it again! It was SO easy and it’s fantastic! I doubled the recipe and followed it just as written. Thank you for such a great recipe! 🙂
You’re so kind, thanks for the comment!
I made this salsa yesterday for our superbowl festivities. It is the most delicious salsa I have ever made. I think it gets even better the longer it sits! Not that it will be around much longer, heh.
Hi! I made this two days ago (minus the lime..’cause I just didn’t have it) and my family devoured it!! I had to make another batch this morning for breakfast– yum!
I *JUST* put this together in my food processor and tasted it–amazing! I used fire roasted tomatoes w/ green chilis (instead of Rotel) and a large shallot (instead of small onion) since that’s what I had on hand, FYI. It is reminiscent of the salsa at my favorite Tex-Mex restaurant in my hometown–not watery, not chunky, and wonderfully fresh. I can’t wait to try it after the flavors marry for a few hours in the fridge–I hope it lasts that long!
This was great!! My silly grocery store didn’t have jalapenos so I used 1/4 serrano and it was delicious!
Glad you liked it!
I found this recipe from Pinterest and I cannot believe how good it tastes. I’ve made it once a week for the past 3 weeks. It will definitely be my go to salsa recipe for when I do not make my own with fresh tomatoes. Thanks so much for the recipe!
So glad you like it, thanks for the comment!
This salsa looks like perfection! YUM!
It is so delicious, pretty close to perfection if I do say so myself!
This is almost the same recipe my sister in law from Mexico uses. She uses sugar instead of honey and adds cracked pepper too. Love that you can make it in seconds!
I just made this and oh my it is AMAZING! And just what I was looking for! I have had a hard time finding a salsa recipe that was simple and tasty! So glad I found this!
I am pinning it!

Awesome, thx for sharing!
I made your salsa recipe today with my two boys and we all loved it!! Thanks for the wonderful recipe!
Thank you for this recipe. I love salsa. Never made my own til last night. I ate all of it. Lol so good! I will never by salsa again. Making my own now is so much better
So glad you liked it. It’s so easy, right? 🙂
I can tell you right now that this is going to be my “go to” salsa recipe…it’s brilliant!
Ah, thanks! Too easy NOT to be your go to! Enjoy!!
I made this salsa and it totally ROCKS! I used my own canned tomatoes and parsley instead of cilantro (just what I had on hand) and a fresno chile-yummy! And I love that you are local. Great winter salsa, and was so happy to use my summer tomatoes.
Yeah for canned tomatoes!!! I do the same thing!! So glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.
Try adding 1 table spoon of cumin and 1/4 cup of minced garlic. Its all most the exact recipe I use.
I LOVE this stuff!! It was a huge hit. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
I love this!! I have to make this.. Thank you!
I pinned this recipe yesterday. Can’t wait to try it. Has anyone ever tried to can this?
Found this on Pinterest, really good for a 5 min. salsa. Thank you for sharing.
How long can this be stored in the fridge? I’m going to try and make it tonight 🙂 Thank you!
I’ve kept in the fridge for up to a week!
The cumin is the secret ingredient. You definitely can’t leave it out else it tastes like tomato sauce that went bad. I substituted sugar for honey and added green onions and used lemon instead of lime. it was delicious.
First time ever making salsa… Turned out amazing… Thanks so much 🙂 you rock!
This is so yummy! I tried it because I was making a recipe that called for salsa, and I was out. It did, indeed, come together in less than 5 minutes. And it’s delicious! Thanks so much!
found this recipe via pinterest, it’s the BEST salsa i’ve ever made! thanks!
Thanks so much for the comment, glad you enjoyed the salsa!
I made this and I like it accept the canned tomato-y taste that kinda overpowers the other flavors.. is there any way to make it taste less like canned tomatoes? Will it lose that taste after it marinades for a while?
I don’t find a canned taste if I make sure to use a good quality organic tomato!
Thank you for this recipe! I found it on Pinterest, and made it right away. This is exactly what I like salsa to be! Here’s my post about it! 🙂
http://michellesnewrecipes.blogspot.com/2012/03/easy-blender-salsa.html
This is soooo good. Got this off Pinterest and made last night. It’s almost all gone. I’ll be eating salsa a whole lot more now. I added more garlic (2 large cloves), a bit more salt and a really large jalapeno with seeds. It’s perfect! Thanks so much for this awesome recipe. I used to go to Austin Grill just for the salsa and now I don’t have to do that anymore!
It’s the perfect kind of recipe to customize to your liking! Thanks for the comment!
Tried this today and it is wonderful. I left about 1/2 of the jalepeno seeds in and it was perfect.
Nice and spicy! Thanks for the comment!
I love restaurant salsa and am never happy with my homemade pico – it’s just “okay” but this sounds delicious and waaaay easy! Thanks, I will be making it tonight!
Looks yummy. Gonna have to try this recipe and tweet. Makes me want to grow hot peppers again this year. Thanks!
If you use dried cilantro how much would you use?
Honestly, I wouldn’t use dried cilantro. Fresh is best here!
Love this easy recipe, I changed it a bit. I used 2 cans of mild Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilies then omitted the jalapeno completely. I also didn’t have fresh cilantro so used 2-3 Tbsp dried cilantro. Just enough spice for my family. Love it. Thank You..
Try dropping the honey and adding a bit of canned pineapple – drained.
I bet that would be delicious!
Yummy!
I ended up doubling the recipe because my 1/2 onion and 1/2 jalapeno were strooooong and needed the extra tomatoes and cilantro, but I must say this is muy delicioso!
I love my fresh salsa … but oh my, all that slicing and chopping is, well, it makes me sad 😉 I will most certainly try this … with added heat of course!! Thanks for the recipe 🙂
just made this salsa, it is amazing!! mine was a tiny bit spicy but i think i used either too much cilantro or jalepeno. i just put some extra sugar in to balance it. yum, will definitely make again!
I’m always searching for restaurant style salsa at grocery stores, and after making it last night, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I live in Houston where we have some of the great Mexican restaurants, and this salsa was absolutely comparable. Thanks!
Kelley, thanks so much for this wonderful recipe…just now made it and it is the best ever!! I will never buy any salsa again. We love homemade pico de gallo and salsas, but this is my fave and so easy!
hugs from me and my hubby….
I have been trying various salsa recipes and my family fell in love with this one. I make it every week now. Thanks for sharing.
I made this and my family loved it! I didn’t have any jalapenos so I just added a few dashes of Tabasco sauce.
Looks easy enough, though I will skip the monsanto canned veggies in favor of my garden grown ingrediants. I thought you were going to say you threw Pico in the blender, which is all salsa really is. Of course Pico de gallo is nothing like salsa… like apples are nothing like oranges, but BOTH are delicious!!
Made this today after seeing it so many times on pintrest. This is definitely awesome! I accidentally halved the salt (which turned out fine) and I think next time I’d half the honey or leave it out completely since I found it a bit sweet. But overall–amazing!
Thanks for commenting! Gotta love Pinterest! 🙂
Wondering if anybody knows of a substitute for Rotel as I am from Ontario, Canada and can’t find it here……any suggestions appreciated!
Any diced tomato/green chili product would be a nice substitute. I’ve also heard you can order Rotel on Amazon.
I love the salsa. I put it on an enchilada tonight. I think it would be good on some smashed roasted potatos.
So easy to make!
Could you canned this? Best salsa I have had.
You would need to modify the recipe in order to can it safely. I haven’t done it though!
I was wondering how much in cups/tbsp is the onion and jalapeno? Can’t wait to try it! YUM!
Yummy! I love making my own salsa. It’s much better than what you can buy in the grocery store. I’ve made several versions and just tried your version. It’s very good! I didn’t have any lime juice but had everything else on hand. It was still very good without the lime juice. 🙂
I made this and mine is more orangeish.. omitted the honey and added a whole jalapeno including the seeds. followed the recipe dead on otherwise.. it’s a little runny too 🙁 Any suggestions to thickening it or making it the deep red color?
Thanks SO much for sharing this recipe! I loved it to so much because it is so easy to whip up right before I head in for a night shift. All the nurses in the ICU love it when I whip up a batch and bring it in.
I had to share it with the nursing community so I posted it to my blog.
http://realnewnurse.blogspot.com/2012/04/5-minute-salsa-recipe.html
I love, love, love this salsa. I’ve made it several times and it’s been runny, so this time I drained out some of the juice from the can of tomatoes (not the Rotel). Perfection!!! Thank you thank you!
You’re so welcome, thanks for the comment!!
I’ve made salsa very similar to your recipe for years. People never believe me when I tell them it is mostly from canned tomatoes and takes only 5 minutes. I also like to use the fire-roasted tomatoes with garlic, too. Adds another layer of smokey flavor!
Do you know if all of these ingredients fit into the mini food processor? I don’t have the full-size one…
I think this amount is too big for a mini food processor. I would advise to do it in two batches!
This truly was fast and easy and tastes Fantastic!!
I LOVE salsa & I have to say that this is the best salsa (& the easiest to make!) For using canned tomatoes…you can’t go wrong with this recipe!
I agree, for canned tomatoes, it’s the best!
This looks fantastic. I will definitely try the blender method to save preparation time. However, I would recommend using fresh ingredients rather than canned for a healthier and fresher flavor…always!
Agreed, but this salsa is great in the dead of winter when the tomatoes aren’t looking their best!
This recipe looks so good! How much does it make?
It makes just under a quart.
Just made this salsa, SUPER easy and very good!!! Did not have any honey so that is the only thing missing but it is perfect!! THANKS for sharing this recipe!!
So good! I have made this about 6 times now. I made it to bring over to a friend’s house and I got 2 calls this morning asking for the recipe. Thank you! I never made salsa before in my life and now this is my favorite!
Best salsa recipe ever! It was so good I even did a blog post and linked back to your site (giving you full credit, of course). I can’t wait to try more of your recipes.
Blog post re your salsa: http://craftyhomeimprovementmisadventures.blogspot.com/2012/05/salsa-time.html
Is this salsa recipe able to be canned? Any help would be appreciated. Any info on how I would do this? I have never canned before but love this recipe. I would like to make a huge batch at once and can it for later use.
Thanks!
Shannon
I don’t think this is suitable for canning. You have to be so careful with canning, good luck!
Try freezing abt a cup for a while + try it. I freeze my tomatoes all the time that have only been heated to boiling, Adding 1/2-1 tsp. salt per quart. They do just fine for soups + things without any loss in flavor. I have also canned tomatoes w onions + okra. They do great. I would just try some to see if freezing changes it much. It would be handy for quick cooking recipes.
I love this recipe and will be making it this weekend. Thanks so much for providing it. 🙂
Just made this tonight and it was AWESOME!! Thanks so much for the recipe.
This is seriously the BEST salsa EVER!!! And soooo easy to make. We’ve needed a continuous supply of this “goodness” and go through withdrawals when we run out. We gifted this salsa with yummy tortilla chips for Teacher Appreciation Week to our children’s teachers. It’s unanimous. This salsa ROCKS! Thank you for the recipe.
What a great teacher gift!! Thanks for the comment!
An absolute hit at our house – thank you!!

Thank you for this recipe! Oh, sweet mother, is it good! I will never buy salsa again.
This salsa is soooo amazing! It is as good as the stuff I love at my favorite Mexican restaurant! I am going to try freezing it. I never want to not have some on hand! Thanks a bunch!!
Great idea, let me know how freezing it works out!
I bought the diced tomatoes for salsa do i need to use the food processor since already diced in up? How many cans for 25 people and rest of your measurements for this salsa for 25. Thanks And loved all the reviews.
For 25 people, I would triple the recipe!
If you want a salsa that is truly Mexican use fresh tomatillos an peppers. Roast them until the outsideskin is blackened. Add that along with some onion, garlic, salt and very small amount of water to blender. That is Mexican salsa (sin molcajete).
This is awesome salsa! So easy to make and I love, love, love it!
Thanks for the recipe!
This salsa is absolutely delicious! I have made it time and time again. So easy and goes well with tortilla chips! Everyone always raves about how good it is.
So glad it’s such a hit, thanks!!
I use a jar of medium or hot Herdez salsa and two cans of el pato sauce and everything she uses except the honey and tons and tons of lime juice. Makes is so fresh! My fiance calls it cheater salsa (but he keeps asking me to make it!) :p Oh I also add green onions right at the end and leave them as little slices, I like that extra crunch!
I don’t cook often. I don’t know if making salsa is even considered cooking, but I made this and it is as good or better than my favorite Mexican restaurant’s.
Definitely counts as cooking, well done! 🙂
I just made two batches of this for the first time. Oh man, I am ruined on store bought stuff. Best of all my husband loved it! He loves salsa with a kick and he enjoyed this one. Thank you so much!
The chips that you have look delicious! 🙂
What brand is it?
I don’t even remember– I usually just pick up what looks good (or is on sale) at the store!
Can you can this? I’m new to canning and am not sure??
No. Canning salsa is a game of science and this doesn’t have enough acid.
Looks scrumptious. I’ve been making salsa with fresh tomatoes, but it’s a bit too chunky, so I think I’m going to try it with the tinned tomatoes next time for a better consistency.
Thank you for the wonderful recipe. Great base & can see making this with a combo of fresh/canned ingredients. I followed your recipe exactly with the exception of adding 1/4 teasp. of sweet agave in place of the honey.
You have several wonderful recipes. This was my first I’m sure of many I will enjoy.
Best salsa ever, thanks for sharing. I will never buy salsa again!!!
We love this. Easy and tasty.
Thanks for recipe of salsa, it was wonderful and planing my next batch soon!
I have a salsa recipe that I have made for a few years now, it requires a lot of chopping! You can definitely tell it is homemade. I was so excited to see this recipe! I tried it tonight and my family LOVED it! They said they would have thought it was from a jar, but they were at the table while I was making it! Thanks for sharing!
Kelley (hehe), do you think this will work alright with an immersion blender?
Another Kelley with an E!! I think it would work just fine with an immersion blender!!
I make this all the time using an immersion blender. My son will eat all of it,in one day, if given a chance.
We LOVE this salsa so much!! We eat it almost daily, so when I say we love it, I mean we LOVE-LOVE it! So much so, in fact, that I added jalapenos and cilantro to our garden this year, only now we can’t eat it and give it away fast enough – can this recipe be canned? I’d love to hear if anyone has had success canning this recipe. Thanks so much, mountain mama for sharing!
I’d like to make this in bulk, and do a hot water bath for canning them. Have you done that? Shouldn’t it be fine that way? Thanks for your help. Love the recipe!!
I wouldn’t can it as written. Canning is so variable and I think you might need to add some more acid. I like to can tomatoes and then use them through the winter to make salsa!
I just made this tonight and it was incredible. Being born and raised in Texas, I’ve had a LOT of salsas and this is one of my favourites. Thanks so much!
Wondering if you have tried canning the salsa and if so how it does. Did not see anything about that but skimmed the comments quickly. Can’t wait to try it
Have not canned this particular recipe. I don’t think it’s safe to do so as written.
This is a great recipe, just made it. I used fresh tomatoes from the garden added a bit more cumin and 1 Chilpotle Pepper in Adobe sauce that gave it a amazing smokey flavor. Fast and delicious!
I pinned this so long ago but just not got around to making it — the whole family loved it!!
To answer someone’s question above, YES you CAN can salsa! I have a special canner that I use for salsas and homemade soups. There is a high acid content in the tomatoes but, even still, I don’t recommend old-fashioned water bath canning. But, you certainly CAN can using a pressure canner and you can do it safely provided you follow the pressure canner guidelines.
Probably a silly question…I’ve received a large quantity of tomatoes from a generous neighbor. Not familiar with canning, but would it cause any problems to can large quantities of this salsa, instead of just canning the tomatoes? Thanks in advance!
I wouldn’t can this salsa as written. I think canning tomatoes and using them to make this salsa is the best way to go!!
This salsa is the most amazing thing ever!!! My family literally freaked out when I made it!! Thank you so much for sharing! 🙂
You’re so welcome!!! Glad you liked it.
I could survive on salsa and chips alone! {well that and bacon and butter, which are the staples of life} People don’t realize how easy it is to make fresh and the taste is so much better.
We’d make great friends, Wendy! I could live off of chips, salsa, bacon and butter as well!!
I threw my old salsa recipe out. This one is a keeper! Thanks!
You’re so welcome! Glad you like it!
“This is perfect for the winter months when tomatoes aren’t in season but you’re craving a fresh simple appetizer.” — Canned tomatoes are in season all year long. I want a recipe for salsa that uses fresh tomatoes!
I just made this today and it was AWESOME! Thank you for posting this recipe! It totally tastes like Mexican Village or Lacasit’s salsa. I made mine with Hunts Fire Roasted Diced Tomatoes and 1 jalapeno and it had KICK!! My nose is still running! YUMMO!
This salsa the best I have had! Thank you for sharing your recipe!
I’m always looking for a delicious salsa that I don’t have to cook. I love the idea of throwing it together from a few canned and fresh ingredients. Thanks!
I’ve made this salsa 3 different times since discovering it on pinterest! I love it. The first time it was super hot, I had no honey and ended up using sugar to calm it down. The second time I had craved it, but morning sickness kicked in and most of it got wasted. 🙁 This time baby is over morning sickness and craves spicy foods! Made it tonight. Delicious! I froze half of it so it doesn’t get wasted. Also think I will start leaving out the cilantro, I really dislike the flavor of it. Other than that I LOVE this salsa!
Oh and I just have a mini food processor. It takes a while because you can only do a few ingredients (or 1 can) at a time. But worth it. Also the second time I made it with fire roasted tomatoes. It was good but I prefer the plain tomatoes.
This is delicious! I did have everything on hand and made it as soon as i came across this on pinterest. I love it!
I made this recipe for the first time last week and just finished making batch number 3 and 4! We LOVE it! And so do all of our friends! It’s so simple, delicious, and not to mention CHEAPER!! I always have most of these ingredients on hand anyway. Thank you!
You are SO welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you can this salsa??? Thinking Christmas gifts…
This isn’t a recipe that’s safe for canning, sorry!
I’m new to making salsa but can’t wait to try this! I have a ton of tomatoes from the garden, instead of canned tomatoes how many fresh tomatoes would you recommend using?
If you have fresh tomatoes by all means use them while you can!!
hi wondered how long this will last in the fridge?
I’d make sure to eat it within a week!
What would you say is the spice level of this salsa? i like a pretty good kick in mine so just wanted to see if I needed to add more kick or leave it as is. thanks
It’s on the milder side. If you want it hotter, choose the hot version of Rotel and add some more jalapeno than called for!
Thanks! on my way to the store and going to get some this should be great! I love salsa but I don’t like mine chunky! I love smooth salsa! it’s the best! 🙂 can’t wait to try thi! 🙂
Oh, it’s not any good after being frozen. Was soggy tasting. Definitely something you make and eat!
Hi. I found this recipe on Pinterest and thought I would let you know of another recipe if you need your fix NOW! Here in SoCal, the Krogers grocery store is Ralphs and they have a Ralphs brand Salsa Style Diced Tomatos, which already has the onions and chiles in it. I assume other Kroger stores have it as their own brand. Add 2 T white vinegar and 1 tsp mesquite liquid smoke, hit it with a stick blender, and you have a deadringer for the salsa they serve at Chevy’s restaurant.
Love it! made some just now and just added extra jalapeno. and used rotel with cilantro and lime. also used some lemon juice since I didn’t want to use my dad corona limes haha. all the same though it turned out great! 🙂
So glad you liked it- improvisations are always great!
This is my favorite recipe! I like to add Avocado!
It looks good, fresh, but a little too blended. We like our SALSA chunky! Plus we make 3 different temperatures…SISSY, FIRE IN THE HOLE, AND LAVA JOE!!! Plus you can cook with our salsa as well…spaghetti, chili, red beans and rice to mention a few. Check out After Midnight Salsa online, or on Facebook when you have time…. Great recipe thought Mtn Momma 🙂 Jimmy
I’ll check it out. Thanks!
Thanks for a great recipe, it’s simple, quick to make and good.
Just made this – it is a keeper!
This person is using your recipe and calming it as her own.

Just thought that I’d let you know.
There is no better salsa. I make at least 4 batches when I make it and everyone gobbles it up!
Absolutely fantastic salsa! So easy! I had the unique opportunity to compare it to the Chevy’s salsa yesterday(who doesn’t like that salsa?), this salsa tastes BETTER! – the flavors are fresher. Thank you for sharing it. I am going to make some for gifts. Fabulous!!!
Hmmm, already left a message but didn’t post…Absolutely FABULOUS salsa! I had the unique opportunity to have Chevy’s salsa yesterday (who doesn’t like that salsa?) to compare, and this salsa tastes BETTER!! – the flavors are fresher! Use fire roasted (or char your veggies) for even more magnificent flavor! Fantastic! Going to make some for gifts. Thank you!
How much does this recipe yield? I’ll be giving it as an x-mas gift in the “standard size” mason jar. 🙂 Thanks!
My best guess is the recipe makes 3-4 pint size mason jars. Good luck and what a great gift to give!
I loved this recipe when I first came across it. Not only the presentation of it with the photos but also the fresh taste of it when I first ever made it. I just couldn’t get enough. I did notice, however, the first time I made it and all the following other times that in general, it seemed pretty watery. I excused it the first time I made it because it was a new recipe I had never tried. Now that I’ve repeated it, I’m noticing it even more. The only thing I’ve done different in the recipe is substituted organic maple syrup for the honey, as I do not eat honey. Is there something else that could be done without really altering this recipe just to thicken it up a bit? Because I’m about to drain this stuff and I don’t want to lose anything good about it.
Thank you for the kind comment!
I JUST made this!! Oh my gosh! I have always wanted to make my own salsa. It is the best ever. Better than any restaurant and I added a touch more garlic and cilantro just because I love them both but other than that, stuck to the recipe above! Delicious!
Always good to see a simple salsa recipe that doesn’t include vinegar…people don’t realize how that ‘ruins’ the taste. This is perfect for friends coming over to watch football.
This is the recipe I’ve been searching for! It’s the perfect combination of spicy and sweet. Thanks so much for sharing!
I have a VERY easy one too lol
I use 1 can Roasted Garlic tomatoes, 2-3 Jalapenos (from Church’s chicken), finely chopped onion, Minced Garlic (in the glass), Cilantro, salt and pepper, and Lemon juice….I use my lil hand held blender to smash the bigger pieces……..My husband HAS to eat this with Every meal or he would be upset lol…Try it!
O. Em. Gee! I am so super excited I found this. Just poured it out of the blender and I cannot stop eating it. I read the reviews and knew that it was gonna be pretty good but this was above my expectations. Jarred salsa -NEVER AGAIN!! Can’t wait to try this with fresh tomatoes. The recipe is GREAT. BRAVO and thanks for sharing it 🙂 This ones going in my recipe tin FOR SURE!
I too was wondering about freezing it but it’s kind of a moot point since there will never be any left over 🙂 Plus, it’s so easy to put together. Who doesn’t have a couple of minutes???
THANKS AGAIN!
Found this on Pinterest! This recipe is a winner. I make it at least once a week. Thanks so much!
This was so good and so fast!! I didn’t have rotel on hand so I took another posters advice and used two cans of diced tomatoes and doubled the salt and jalapeno. I WILL be making this exactly as the recipe states because I’m sure it’s delicious as is. I am no longer hungry for the taco’s I was gong to make because of this addicting salsa!
Now this salsa rocks-easy to make and no doubt delicious. It is on my list.
Thank you for sharing this recipe – it is delicious!!! I made it last week for the first time and just made another batch today for Sunday. I have been on the search for a long time for a great salsa recipe and this is it! Perfect!
All ingredients but avoid cumin powder; it overpowers the other other ingredients…
how long does this salsa stay fresh for in the fridge? Its delicious!!
It should keep in the fridge up to one week though it doesn’t usually last that long in our house!
Thanks for the awesome recipe! Made this in about three minutes
Made this salsa this afternoon! Wow, so very good and it hit the spot! I didn’t have any plan diced tomatoes so I used a can of the fire roasted tomatoes instead! So delicious!
Love this salsa! We were fighting over the bowl. Will make over and over and over….
This recipe looks delicious. I love that it is blended, I really don’t like thick salsa. This is a must make 🙂
Just made this salsa!! Roasted a can of whole tomatoes, the onions, jalepeno pepper and garlic first. I will never buy store salsa again. Just think of how good it will be when tomatoes are in season!!
Love the idea of roasting it. Great idea!
LOVE this recipe. I add extra salt and lime, but that’s just me. Also, tonight I tried mixing it with a avocado and it made a pretty tasty guacamole. So easy!
This salsa looks so good! I love all the healthy ingredients and how quick and easy it is to make:)
I just tried this salsa at my Nephew and his girlfriends house
warming party. It was awesome. I think if you would like it
spicy you could add a can of the HOT Rotel. I use the hot just to add to my regular jar salsas and its awesome and OMG Hot. But I like it hot.
This is very similar to the salsa I have made for years, and which is very good! I have never used rotel OR honey in mine. I may have to try that next time just to see the difference. But one thing I did change a few years back, kinda by accident, is the onion. I started using green onions in place of regular onion, about 3 for one can of tomatoes. They give such a different flavor, and I switched forever. This is my favorite kind of salsa (though almost all are good in their own way), but definitely trying with the honey. Thanks for posting and promoting salsa!
I never make less that 4 batches at a time, it’s that good. My family would disown me if I did not make it for every family get together, regardless of what we are having to eat. The best chips that we have found are the Juanita’s brand found at Win Co. We put them in the oven with a little season salt and Yummy, they go perfectly with this amazing salsa!!
I’ll have to look for the Juanita’s brand. I love the idea of heating them up first!
Great recipe! Totally trying this!
I tried this with fresh tomatoes and a little bit of water. All I ended up with was a Mexican flavor tomato smoothie. I guess my blender is too powerful, I will try again using only a knife.
Tomatoes have so much water, I don’t think you need to add any water!
I would like to know what is in a can of ´´Rotel´´. I am from Holland, and I just made this without Rotel, because it is not for sale here. But what is in it?
It’s canned tomatoes with green chilis, onions and spices.
Okay, great! Thank you! I already added chili, onions and spices myself, it tasted really, really great..I have to make it again tomorrow, for about the 4th time, for a birthday dinner!
Yeah! So glad you’re enjoying it!! Thanks for the kind comment!
And I also would like to know, for how long will it be okay to eat?
It will keep in the fridge for up to a week or so.
I didn’t read through all 329 comments (WOW!) but was wondering how long you think this will keep in the fridge? It made almost a full quart mason jar so I’m thinking of sharing with my mom 🙂 Im going to make the Tex-Mex Rice & Beans this week and use this instead of fresh tomatoes and we will eat chips and salsa, but I dont want it to spoil before we can use it. Thank you!
(P.S. Mine was not sweet at all and I contemplated leaving out the honey, but like to make a recipe as written the 1st time. I think it must depend on how acidic the tomatoes are that you use. )
Thanks for the comment! The salsa will keep at least through the week so you should be fine to make it ahead. The honey is optional and feel free to use as little or as much as you’d like to get it how you like it!
Oh sheesh. Disregard my question about how long it keeps. I see now its posted right above mine. Thank you!
I can’t wait to try this recipe! I hate the salsa that you find in the grocery store. Thanks for sharing!!
Just made this for our Cinco de Mayo dinner for tonight. It was pretty good! I did have to change a few things. First, I think the store forgot to bag our onion, so I just put in some onion powder. Secondly, my husband picked up the Mexican Ro-tel, which has cilantro and lime juice already in it. I still added more cilantro, as I believe fresh cilantro tastes waaaay better than anything else, but I forgot to add the lime juice. I also only added a 1/4 of a seeded jalapeño.
Personally, I thought this was a little spicy. (I don’t handle spice well at all) but my husband thought it was fantastic. I think next time I may try the mild Ro-tel and add a touch more honey.
Thank you so much for this recipe. If you don’t mind, I would love to write this up on my recipe blog and share it with my readers. 🙂
You’re more than welcome to link back to my recipe but I’d rather you not share the exact recipe on your site. Thanks for asking first!
Active comments on a post that is from so long ago is testament to a great recipe!! This recipe is very similar to my signature salsa: Rotel, diced tomatoes, onion, garlic, lime, salt, & pepper. Mine is left chunky rather than processed smooth. I just had to share my secret ingredient which everyone raves over. Rather than cilantro I use fresh mint from the garden. It gives it an unmistakable flavor and slight cooling on the tongue to accompany the heat of the salsa.
Thanks for sharing. I’m going to try that this summer. I love mint!!
This salsa is amazing!! It’s way better than anything you can buy in a store and is definitely restaurant quality. It’s the only one I serve now!! Thanks for sharing!
You’re so welcome!
I love this salsa! It’s very similar in taste to my recipe, but much simpler. I make it all the time. I never buy jarred salsa anymore, as this is just as good as all the Mexican restaurants around here….even better than a few. The only problem is I could probably eat the whole batch myself because it’s so addicting!
I made this for my last week. There were 16 of us and EVERYONE thought it was amazing!! Thank you for this recipe. It is the best!
I do the same recipe but without the honey and cumin, but all fresh roasted ingredients and a secret ingredient a shot of good tequila!
Found this via Pinterest and my family ADORES it. They keep asking for me to make it. I’ve reduced the jalapeno quite a lot (I live with a bunch of wimps who can’t handle spicy stuff) but it’s absolutely perfect otherwise! Thanks so much.
Instead of messing with a jalapeno pepper, I just use Hot Rotel. Works great!
OMG! Sooooooooo good, my family begs for this! I grew the peppers this summer just for this recipe! I’ve been making it since I found it here awhile ago! Thanks Kelley! I’m putting this on my Christmas gift list! It’s so easy to make that you could make it right before the holidays along with some pretty packaged chips and some specialty beer! Wow! I’m going to give myself that gift!!! 🙂
Can you can this salsa? Have you ever tried?
It’s not safe for canning.
Can this be canned so it can be stored?
Nevermind 🙂
I Loved This! I had to make more because I ate too much! 😀
I make salsa similar to this when tomatoes are out of season. A suggestion to add more flavor is to roast the jalapeño and roast poblano peppers. I don’t use honey and I just use regular canned tomatoes. If you roast the peppers it adds so much flavor that you will never want to use Rotel tomatoes. My coworkers beg me to bring it to work. Salsa is so easy to make that I always wonder why people buy the jar stuff and making it is cheaper too.
Just made this! DELISH! Thanks for the recipe!!
I’m an American living in Australia and have been looking for an easy salsa recipe. (Mexican isn’t easily found, here.) Can you give me a suggestion to replace the Rotel tomatoes? We don’t have this here. Thanks.
you can use a small can of green chili’s and a pinch of cumin!
Thanks so much for getting back to me. I look forward to trying your recipe!
I have made this salsa several times and it is just the BEST!!! I was wondering if I can, can it? If so how would I do that? Thanks so much for introducing me the BEST salsa ever!!
I wouldn’t recommend canning it, sorry!
This is SO similar to mine, I couldn’t believe it when I saw it on Pintrest! People ask me to make it all the time. I’ve never used the honey (but I’m going to try) I roast my garlic first & we like it hot so i use a whole jalapeno & a whole serrano pepper but my “secret” ingredient is to toss in a corn tortilla in the blender with everything. I saw that on a Rick Bayless episode. Oh & I add a pinch of powdered chicken bouillon, I don’t know why, I think I saw my Mother -in-law do it! All in all, GREAT salsa!! 5 stars!
I’m going to try the roasted garlic!
Do you know about how many cups/oz/pints this recipe will make?
It makes just about a quart!
Perfect! Thanks!
hey! i am from southern california and i absolutely love mexican food, and i have to say that this is one of my favorite salsa recipes – ever!!
i currently just moved to belgium and i was wondering what you can substitute for some of the ingredients? i know it makes my spices limited, but if you (or anyone reading could help, i would be most grateful) most specifically: 1- 10 oz can original Rotel.
thank you so much!
Caitlin
Instead of using jalapeno peppers, use Serrano peppers for a better flavor. They are a bit more powerful and spicy so you have to be careful and experiment with how hot you want the salsa to get. My rule of thumb is one medium seedless and veinless Serrano is mild, three with seeds and veins is spicy. You cab adjust the heat by keeping or removing the seeds and veins. Wear gloves and don’t touch your eyes, even hours after you work with the hot peppers of any type. Water doesn’t clean that from your hands, rubbing alcohol does.
Also, to get a more authentic flavor dice a couple of tomatillos into the salsa. They look like small green tomatoes and have a paper thin covering around them. Peel off the covering and discard. Wash the tomatillo and cut out the stem. Dice and throw into the mix just like you use tomatoes. I usually have two tomatillos and a large red tomato in a batch of salsa.
If you can’t add honey, use a tiny bit of a powdered sweetener. Sweet flavor takes away some of the hot spicy power of the pepper from the capsaicin. Having more pepper in the salsa makes it taste better but the sweetener takes away some of the sting. Enjoy!
My very first “homemade” salsa and I am pleased!! It tastes great and was so simple to make. It definitely is not a “thick” salsa but that’s ok.
Thanks!
Can you tell me how many servings you would get out of this if you follow the recipe as it states?
Just about 1 quart
Try using the Rotel with lime and cilantro already in it , along with the rest of the ingredients …..this is restaurant quality for less than 2 dollars
I just made this tonight (followed the recipe almost exactly) and it was AMAZING. Will be making again and again. Thanks for a great recipe.
I have been making this for about 6 months now and have made it about 10 times. It is the best salsa ever and so easy! Sometimes I serve it along side a bowl of queso, yummy!
Found your version slightly modified (see below) on-line for my kids high school class project. Made it and everyone fell in love with it!!! We like our salsa a bit more spicy so would suggest a simple but flavorful modification:
Broil two large Jalapenos and one large Serrano Chili until their skin begins to bubble and turn black. Slice off the stems and throw the ENTIRE chilies, seeds and all, into the blender (works best) or food processer.
This is just spicy enough that some say it’s hot but guess what, that can’t stop eating it.
Great recipe. It’s been a year since the first batch and now I’m required by my family to always have a jar in the fridge. I never post comments but this recipe deserved a comment.
1 28oz can whole plum tomatoes, drained (save the tomato sauce it comes in for something else–don’t use the kind with basil in it)
1/2 medium red onion, roughly chopped
2 large garlic cloves, peeled
1 large jalapeño, stem and most of seeds removed (Like it super spicy? I would start with one, then taste and add another if needed. It’s got pretty decent heat at this level, and the heat increases as it sits.)
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1 small to medium size bunch of fresh cilantro, washed and bottom roots/tough stems trimmed
Juice of 2 medium limes
Thanks a bunch
It’s been some time since you posted this, but I wanted to add my thanks to the others. I love this! My son is a salsa fiend, and this has been fantastic for snacks and munchies. I also put it on chicken, fish… really, anything. Fabbo. Thank you!
My husband will be on his own with the boys this weekend. I need to make this today, will it keep alright..should I freeze? Thanks
It will keep in the fridge for up to a week or so!
This is the best salsa recipe! We been using this for over 2 years now 🙂 thank you!
Months later, I’m still making this salsa. As far as I’m concerned, it’s why the internet exists.
This is a great salsa! My family and i love it, and I am making it for my Spanish class this week!
Have made this many times and its the best recipe I have found! Thanks for sharing!
Great salsa = Empty bowl & Happy friends!! 🙂
So glad you liked it! Chips + salsa = LIFE!!
This is a great salsa recipe. We have used it many times.
I just made this and had a taste before storing in frig….WOW!! Best salsa I’ve made. THANK YOU for posting and sharing. The chips are ready for this and …GO BRONCOS

Thanks for sharing the recipe. We loves this. Not only is it easy, but it is delicious. I make it frequently and my husband and it has usually disappeared within a couple of days. I was just ready to make another batch and realized that I ought to thank you. 🙂
You are welcome! Thanks for the comment!!
I would just like to say this salsa is the best thing i’ve discovered through pinterest. Found it probably 4 years ago and just wanted to comment and say thank you! I make it ALL the time and everyone loves it!!! Thanks for such an awesome EASY recipe!!
You are so welcome! Thanks for leaving such a kind comment!!
I will not use any other salsa recipe….this is my absolute favorite! I shared a great shrimp quesadilla recipe on the blog today and linked your salsa to compliment it. Check it out!

Thank you!
Katie 🙂
Awesome! Thanks for the shout out!!
Your recipe is much easier than i thought. That’s incredible! Can i use garlic powder for this recipe? If yes, how much garlic powder will be used?
Sure! Try adding 1/4-1/2 teaspoon.
Can I make this in quantity and can it? Salsa is my next canning project.
do you drain the cans of rotel and tomatoes? or just put it all in there, juice n all?
I drain it- not completely- but do remove a bit of the juice.
I have a party coming up and this recipe sounds perfect for whipping up large batches of fresh salsa. Thanks!
Blender Salsa i like this favorite, thanks for receipe and beuatiful pic
Love this recipe. It’s my go to and I make it all the time~
Overdue review and thanks. I found this recipe *years* ago and began surprising friends with “my” amazing homemade salsa skills. I haven’t ever bothered to save the recipe or memorize it, and was relieved to still find it after all these years by just googling “mountain mama salsa”. Huzzah! Still here, and a sign that my gratitude is long overdue. Easy recipe, quick to put together, and a guaranteed hit at parties if you have access to a decent food processor or blender. Thanks so much for sharing!
Great just like this, or a good place to start from if you want to mix it up! I never need to buy salsa from the store.
How long do you think it would keep in the fridge? Just found a little jar in the back when I was cleaning out. Hate to throw it away. It still smells good.
This is my favorite salsa and so very easy to make. I always double the recipe when I make it so I can share with friends and family.
It will last up to a week!
I just made this. I’m am never buying salsa again!
I didn’t have an onion, so used onion powder. And used Hot Rotel with habaneros, because we like our salsa spicy. If I was served this salsa in a restaurant, I would come back for more! Thank you for the recipe.
Love this salsa – one of my favorite for my new ninja blender!
Truly appreciate the way you made this restaurant style Salsa. Everything is so nicely described that really helped me. Looking forward for more such recipes in future too.
Do you think it would keep in the fridge for a long time?
For at least a week, maybe two.
thanks for the reply 🙂
mmmm, this salsa looks so yummy…!!!
I am a very big fan of salsa and I loved this recipe
I make this salsa all the time and everyone loves it!
Delicioso. Outstanding recipe. Thanks for sharing this salsa, this one is so amazing.
This salsa is the most amazing thing ever. We tried it for the very first time and everyone loved it in my family.
There is nothing better than going to a good Mexican restaurant and eating all of the chips and salsa in sight. Fresh homemade salsa is thee best and I especially like making a big batch at home. What is it about chips and salsa that is so good and addicting? I especially love eating salsa with some whole grain chips for a healthy snack. This salsa is perfect and honestly the BEST that I have tried. I have been making it for a while now, but I think I have perfected it and made it the very best. And with a few ingredients, 5 minutes of your time, you will be having all of the chips and salsa that your heart desires! more info Query Beast
Love this recipe, it’s extremely modifiable and I make it often.
Everything is so nicely described that really helped me. With the help of this, I also make restaurant-style Salsa at home. Thanks for helping me a lot.
Thank you so much for use full Information. I Liked your post.
I have read your excellent post.
This Blender Salsa recipe looks quick and easy to make! Can’t wait to try it out.
Has anyone tried using a different type of tomato in this recipe? How did it turn out?
I love this salsa recipe! The flavor is well rounded and delicious. I made it to recipe first and it was fantastic. Then I added the aforementioned from the bog, carrot and I can’t get enough. I had a 3 jalapenos and the carrot brings down the spice. Cumin, sweetener, lime are necessary elements. Thank you!
